FINDING THE GRID - WOVEN WORKS

This work was started during a residency at Haystack Mountain School of Craft in Maine. I am interested in exploring the idea of 'softening a grid' as a means of reconnecting with natural elements. Gridded structures (maps, roadways, architecture, images, representations) mediate our relationship with the natural world, creating a barrier between us and a true, honest relationship to land. Here I attempt to break down these rigid structures present in woven cloth - one of humankind's most ancient technologies. Here the grid is fleeting - balanced between soft and hard.

These pieces come with a wall mounting system so that they can hang effortlessly, floating away from the wall slightly. I recommend hanging these in a spot with no direct sunlight.

"Mapping Haystack" 100% cotton, hand-dyed with organic indigo, double ikat resist, 2020. 12" x 13.5".

This piece captures the extraordinary and complex balance that was felt during my time at Haystack Mountain School of Craft. It is a woven map of the flow of gentle movements through the campus. The warp for this series was dyed during a natural dye residency at Haystack in August 2019.

HANDWOVEN TABLE LINENS

These handwoven table runners and mats use a variation of the Monk's Belt weave structure. These compositions were improvised on the loom using cotton, cotton/linen, wool, and recycled acrylic yarns.

They have been hemstitched on the ends to secure the weave, and can be hand washed in cold water. These are for decorative purposes more than heavy-use functionality, so keep these as a centrepiece on a table or coffee table.

SCREENPRINTS

These screen prints were made in 2018 at OCAD University. They break down and transform imagery from Google Maps, Streetview, and "Earth" - a technology that relies on the grid to represent our natural and human-made landscapes.

The works come unframed, but I would be happy to suggest some possible framing options for you.
